This June I had the absolute honour of accompanying Sophia Hansen-Knarhoi in her incredible performance at Goolagatup Heathcote gallery in Applecross. The 45 minute show consisted largely of new material, including live versions of songs we have been recording for her upcoming debut album. Sophie is an incredible singer and cellist, with a real eye for the push and pull between experimental expressionism and soft, folk-like sensibilities. While she did her thing, I was using the Hydrasynth to both provide keys-like accompaniment and add conducive textures to the songs. I was also in charge of controlling the field recordings from my laptop.
Goolugatup Sounds, and the Heathcote gallery in general, are incredible catalysts of the arts in Perth and i have a lot of respect for the people involved; so grateful to have been a part of what they do.
Preparation for this performance was frantic and full of life: I arrived home from a month in Melbourne on June 12th, and had at least 3 brand new songs to learn by our performance on the 15th. Pretty much all three days in that small gap were spent entirely at my studio in Northbridge, eagerly trying things out and practicing. I think I'll hold the memory of this last week very dearly, especially as this will be her last performance in Perth before moving to London.
