I recently performed with my beloved friend Sophia Hansen-Knarhoi at Audible Edge's latest experimental live music event, 'Three Flutters,' hosted by Tonelist. The music was presented in the Local and Aesthetic cafe on Beaufort Street, in which a wonderfully cozy set up & bespoke menu of snacks accommodated the most attentive, supportive audience i've ever seen. Sophia and I performed 40 minutes of improvised cello and synthesiser, orbiting a theme of sustained attention against overstimulation. Waves of cello and synth, which both equally remained in flux between harmonious and corrupted, were interspersed with prolonged silences. We were both shocked at how much the audience leaned into these moments of reconciliation; a penny drop would have felt like an explosion in that tensely suspended silence.
Following our performance was an utterly spectacular & honestly moving performance by Nick Ashwood, perhaps the best improvised modular synth piece i've seen, as well as an invigorating percussion performance by Sivakumar Balakrishnan and Alex Reid.
